The Des Moines Community Orchestra is a non-profit organization run by its members, who annually elect a seven member board of directors from orchestra membership. Terms on the board are two years, and are staggered so that in any given year at least three board members remain in office, ensuring some carryover experience is always present on the board. The board of directors is in charge of managing the affairs of the orchestra, including hiring a Music Director and Conductor. Currently, Carl Johnson is the Music Director and Conductor of the Des Moines Community Orchestra.

The following musician-members were elected to the Board of Directors by the membership of the Des Moines Community Orchestra. Elections are held each spring at the end of each concert season. The gray shaded area indicates the two-year terms of each member. Half the board is elected one year; the other half the next, maintaining experienced members continuously. Okay, a seven-member board doesn't have equal halves ... three one year, four the next. J
